AI technology has opened up a world of possibilities for people looking to enhance their lives. Whether it’s creating art, composing music, or even planning your meals for you, the potential of AI seems limitless.

There are inherent risks when blind buying a perfume. You might end up not liking the scent after spending a significant amount of money on it. Entrusting this decision to an AI chatbot like ChatGPT can be even riskier.

This didn’t deter TikTok user Caroline (@carolinemstern on TikTok) from taking a chance. She decided to use AI to help her choose a birthday gift for herself.

Letting ChatGPT pick out the perfume for me to blind buy for myself for my birthday present 🙄🥹 this was so fun omg #chatgpt #perfumetiktok #perfume #perfumetok #perfumeaddict #nicheperfume #blindbuy #blindbuyfragrances #gourmand #greenscreen

Caroline’s exact request to the chatbot was, “I want you to pretend to be me and pick the one that is the most gourmand, and the one that sounds the most “edible”.” She then proceeded to enter the details of four fragrances along with their notes.

ChatGPT diligently compared the four fragrances, even delving into the depths of their gourmand flavours. It carefully eliminated two options that didn’t quite match the criteria of being “dessert-like,” narrowing down the choices to the final two fragrances.

It came down to one final perfume and Caroline took a leap of faith by ordering the fragrance it had recommended.

Perfume enthusiast Yana (@TheScented on YouTube) could be the perfect candidate to put the AI database to the test.

She sought fragrance recommendations from ChatGPT and mentioned her collection of more than 500 fragrances, hoping to discover a scent she hasn’t tried yet.

This is probably no easy feat as she owns over 500 fragrances, which you might notice from the rows of perfume bottles displayed behind her.

How it Works

Caroline shared her favourite perfumes, the fragrances she uses the most, and provided personal details like her gender, age, and lifestyle to ChatGPT. She also made sure to mention her avid interest in fragrances.

They didn’t get off to a great start when ChatGPT suggested TOM FORD’s Black Orchid, a fragrance she felt was overpowering for her.

After that, it suggested well-known, mainstream scents that most perfume lovers would have already tried — such as popular picks like Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 and Kilian Paris Love, Don’t Be Shy.

Unimpressed, she decided to be more specific in her request, asking for recommendations on niche fragrances and detailing the notes she dislikes, as well as the ones she’s excited to try.

She sent in a second prompt, which produced results that had impressed her. ChatGPT had recommended her a good mix of fragrances she has already tried and loved, as well as some that caught her attention but she has yet to try.

Although most of the recommendations were spot-on this time, she wanted to challenge the system a bit more.

This time, she specifically asked for smaller, lesser known brands, and the chatbot delivered exactly what she was looking for.

Her verdict? An impressive rating of 7.5/10.

Limitations of AI

Despite the remarkable advancements made by AI, it is important to acknowledge that it still has its own set of limitations.

In one of its responses, she highlights an error made by the AI chatbot, where it confused Atelier Cologne with Le Labo. (Pro tip: if you ever come across any mistakes made by these AI chatbots, feel free to correct them. It will contribute to their knowledge base and enhance their capabilities.)

At its present stage, it lacks the capability to provide diverse recommendations from niche brands. She noticed that it doesn’t feature designer brands, even though some of their perfumes match the fragrance preferences she mentioned.

Considering this, this tool could be better suited for fragrance beginners who feel overwhelmed by the abundance of information available. AI chatbots like ChatGPT are great for sifting through large amounts of data and introducing you to the realm of fragrances.

You never know, it might even assist you in finding your perfect signature scent!
