How Does This Smell Occur?

Research has shown that the presence of this particular smell can be attributed to a chemical called 2-nonenal, which has mainly been found in individuals who are 40 years old or above.
This substance is also present in aged beer and buckwheat, and is known to emit a distinct smell reminiscent of grease and grass.
Additionally, the smell may be linked to the sebum we produce, as it can generate a mildly oily and occasionally musty scent when exposed to air and bacteria.
Furthermore, our sebum production levels and composition may change as we age, potentially influencing our natural odour.
