Plastic surgery is a booming industry in Malaysia, growing steadily at approximately 15% per year.

Unfortunately, there are also many unlicensed practitioners who offer medical enhancements to unsuspecting patients, who are none-the-wiser about who’s qualified and who isn’t.

This has resulted in more than a few botched jobs and consequently, plastic surgery regrets for those who suffer the nasty ill-effects.

Celebrities’ plastic surgery regret

Over the past few years, celebrities who are used to being in the public eye are starting to speak out about their plastic surgery regrets, in interviews and on their own social media pages.

From botched nose jobs to oversized boobs to excessive fillers and botulinum toxin jabs, it seems that the regrets are real.

Supermodel Bella Hadid has said in a 2022 Vogue interview that she regrets the nose job she received when she was just 14 years old: “I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors. I think I would have grown into it.”

And there are more than a few who are not just speaking out on this; some celebs have even taken the plunge to get their procedures reversed.

Personalities like Simon Cowell, Courteney Cox, Victoria Beckham, and Chrissy Teigen, as well as influencers like Blac Chyna have come forward to share about what they’ve done to reverse the work they’ve had done over the years in their quest to reclaim some of their original looks.

Some, like ex-supermodel Linda Evangelista, are still living with the effects of a cosmetic procedure gone wrong, which have left her disfigured and unable to leave her home.

While undergoing the fat-freezing procedure known as CoolSculpting between 2015 and 2016, Evangelista had started to notice unexplained bulges appearing on her body.

She was eventually diagnosed with paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), a rare side effect from the treatment that causes the fatty tissue to thicken and expand rather than breaking them down.

Unfortunately for Evangelista, the procedure seems to have left her permanently disfigured and in deep depression as she shares on her Instagram page, but she hopes that her story will offer comfort to other women who have gone through the same.

Speaking to People magazine in 2022, she says: “I always knew I would age. And I know that there are things a body goes through. But I just didn’t think I would look like this. I don’t recognise myself physically, but I don’t recognise me as a person any longer either. She is sort of gone.”

Celebrities’ plastic surgery reversal

Fortunately, there are other celebrities who have managed to reverse some of the unwelcomed effects of their procedures and surgeries.

Friends star Courtney Cox first shared about her plastic surgery regrets in 2016 and went on to get all her facial fillers dissolved in 2017.

Reflecting on her decision, she says candidly in an episode of the Gloss Angeles podcast: “It’s a domino effect. It’s like you don’t realise that you look a little off, so then you keep doing more cause you look normal to yourself.”

“You look in the mirror and go, ‘Oh, that looks good,’ you think, and you don’t realise what it looks like to the outside person, and just doing too many fillers and having to have them removed—which thank God they are removable—I think I messed up a lot and now luckily I can. I was able to reverse most of that, now I’m actually just older,” she says thankfully.

For some other celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Victoria Beckham and R&B singer K. Michelle this has entailed going under the knife yet again to remove implants and to fix dead or dying tissue.

Whether this is the start of a trend towards a widespread backlash against plastic surgery or whether this just means that more people will be looking to embrace more natural-looking enhancements, only time will tell.

In a 2022 interview with the Sunday Times, she also says: “I tried to chase that youthfulness for years. And I didn’t realise that, Oh shit, I’m actually looking really strange with injections and doing stuff to my face that I would never do now.”

2. Simon Cowell

Music mogul Simon Cowell is known for his sharp tongue and his wrinkle-free visage, but he’s had enough of the latter. Vowing never to inject anything into his face again after he could barely recognise himself in older photos, Cowell has had all his facial fillers removed.

“There was a stage where I might have gone a bit too far… Eric (my son) was in hysterics. Enough was enough. There is no filler in my face at all now. Zero,” he says candidly in an interview with The Sun in 2022.

Today, Cowell is all about healthy eating, drinking lots of water, and trying out new facials.

3. Blac Chyna

4. Victoria Beckham

Fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham famously said in her interview with British Vogue in 2011 that her “torpedo bazooka” breast implants were no more. She confirmed this in another interview with Allure in March 2014.

In a heartfelt letter she penned to her 18-year-old self in the January 2017 edition of British Vogue, Beckham says earnestly: “…don’t mess with your boobs. All those years I denied it – stupid. A sign of insecurity. Just celebrate what you’ve got.”

5. Chrissy Teigen

New mum of three and Instagram star Chrissy Teigen famously got rid of her breast implants in 2020. She even bravely showed her scars on her Instagram page as proof to her naysayers.

“I’d like to be able to zip a dress in my size, lay on my belly with pure comfort! No biggie! So don’t worry about me! All good,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I’ll still have boobs, they’ll just be pure fat. Which is all a tit is in the first place. A dumb, miraculous bag of fat.”

6. K. Michelle

What started out as a lupus scare with symptoms like migraines, fatigue and pain in her legs turned into a decision to remove “black market” butt implants, for American R&B singer K. Michelle. According to People, the illicit injections had spread down her legs and caused damage to her internal tissue.

She’s since had four surgeries to remove the silicone and dead tissue and reconstructive surgery to help her regain some of her old body back.

“Before it was up in the air, but now we know the outcome [of these injections], that your body cannot handle foreign objects in it,” she says in an interview with People magazine in 2018.

7. Yolanda Hadid

Mum to supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, Yolanda Hadid, is no stranger to plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures, but she’s since reversed them all on her 55th birthday in 2019: Botox, fillers, and breast implants.

“Fifty five and smiling from the inside out…finally back to the original 1964,” she declares proudly on her Instagram. “Living in a body free of breast implants, fillers, botox, extensions and all the bullshit I thought I needed in order to keep up with what society conditioned me to believe what a sexy woman should look like until the toxicity of it all almost killed me.”

8. Crystal Hefner

Former Playboy model and widow of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has removed – in her words – “all things toxic”. including her implants from her body in 2016, because they were “slowly poisoning her”. However, she says she didn’t learn her lesson and underwent yet another fat transfer procedure in October 2021, which went horribly wrong.

That prompted her to speak out about the dangers of unrealistic standards of beauty on her own Instagram page: “How our culture defines beauty makes it impossible to keep up with. Women are overly sexualized. I know from the worst kind of experience.”

9. Ashley Tisdale

The High School Musical actress’s looks first came under scrutiny in 2017 for a nose surgery she underwent to correct a deviated septum. Maintaining that it was done to help her breathe better, she went on to get breast implants done because she felt “less than”.

Four years later, the breast implants are out, and Tisdale has shared about her reasons why on her Instagram in 2020.

“But little by little I began struggling with minor health issues that just were not adding up – food sensitivities as well as gut issues that I thought could be caused by my implants.”

10. Nicole Kidman

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has been vocal about her commitment to going all-natural, but she did reveal in an interview with German magazine TV Movie in 2011 that she had tried Botox but hated the effects on her face.

“I have also tried Botox. I didn’t like how my face looked afterwards. Now I don’t use it anymore — I can move my forehead again!”

She also allegedly removed her breast implants in 2017, according to Radar Online.
