How many times have you looked at your teeth in the mirror thinking of ways to achieve whiter-looking teeth? We know – we’ve all been there. Though many have recommended regular flossing to keep your teeth healthy, it’s nearly impossible to avoid stains.

Your morning cup of coffee, an evening glass of red wine, and even seemingly innocuous things, such as tomato sauce and blueberries, can leave stubborn stains on your teeth.

If you’ve always wanted a bright, beautiful smile, then teeth whitening is definitely something you’ve considered. Before we share teeth whitening products and treatments to try, let’s understand what teeth whitening is first.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening involves the process of bleaching your teeth in order to make them appear lighter by removing stains and any discolouration. It’s not just a one-time thing, though. You’ll have to do it regularly in order to maintain your teeth’s whiteness.

As we mentioned, a myriad of things we consume can cause stains on our teeth. Here are the main culprits:

  • Smoking
  • Beverages such as coffee, tea, or colas
  • Ageing. The outer layer of enamel on your teeth wears away, revealing the natural colour of dentin.
  • Certain medications, such as antibiotics
  • Poor dental hygiene

Generally, the process of teeth whitening is perfectly safe and harmless. However, you may experience these side effects:

  • Tooth sensitivity: The inflammation caused by the peroxide exposure during the treatment may cause your teeth to become extra sensitive once it touches your enamel, which is where your nerves of your teeth are located.
  • Gum irritation: Teeth whitening products made contain active ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, which is known to cause irritation to your gums when applied. However, a dentist would take care of this issue by protecting your gums.

These side effects are said to be only temporary, so you can expect them to disappear after some time. Just be sure to read the instructions and manual given by the dentist or included in the home kit.

Do you need a dentist to whiten your teeth?

Although you could get your teeth whitening treatment done simply at home or at any beauty salon, it’s recommended to get your teeth whitened by a dentist. They are professionals who are able to recommend the best teeth whitening treatment for you. After all, you wouldn’t want to risk injuring your teeth in the process.

Teeth whitening products you can use at home

If you prefer to take matters into your own hands, however, there are many safe teeth whitening products that you could use in the comfort of your own home.

1. Teeth whitening toothpaste

Compared to the other teeth whitening treatments, using a whitening toothpaste on a daily basis is less harmful to your teeth. These formulas contain certain polishing agents or chemicals that remove the stains without bleaching, which is why it’s less likely to cause any side effects.

Not to mention, it’s way cheaper than other teeth whitening treatments and can be easily bought over the counter at pharmacies or online. You won’t have to put in much effort as well since you’re already brushing your teeth every single day, morning and night.

We recommend the Colgate Optic White Sparkling White Whitening Toothpaste that retails for RM11 on Shopee (left) and Crest 3D White Brilliance Fluoride Anticavity Whitening Toothpaste that retails for RM7.49 on Shopee (right).

2. Teeth whitening strips and gels

For this form of teeth whitening, you’ll be applying a concentrated gel on your teeth with your fingers or a brush. There are teeth whitening strips available too. The gels are made with peroxide, which is also known as bleach. If you choose this method, then you’ll have to apply it once or twice every day for up to two weeks.

Consistency is key when using a teeth whitening gel. If you don’t maintain applying it as stated by the product, you’ll end up getting disappointed because there wouldn’t be much effect.

We recommend the Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects Luxe that’s priced at RM37 onwards on Shopee (left) and the Dr White Teeth Whitening Strip that’s priced at RM35 onwards on Shopee (right).

3. Teeth whitening trays

With this teeth whitening option, a mouth guard-like tray is filled with a peroxide-based bleaching gel or paste and placed over the teeth for one to several hours a day for up to four weeks.

Teeth whitening trays are typically made of a flexible material that molds to your teeth. The material fits around your teeth gently and allows for whitening on the surface and in between your teeth. These trays can be bought over the counter or prescribed by a dentist, which will be customized to fit according to your teeth.

For at-home trays, we recommend the Blanx O₃X Supreme White Trays, which retails for RM169.90 at Guardian (above). If you’re unsure about how to use the teeth whitening kit at home, consult a dentist immediately to prevent any damage to the tooth enamel or gums from happening.
