There are a few things in life that are inevitable, and cellulite is one of them. The dimpled appearance of skin happens to everyone, and can be caused by anything from weight gain and genetics to ageing.

It’s a completely common condition that can be spotted in women and men of all different body shapes and sizes. Plus, it affects 80 to 90% of women at some point in their lives. Cellulite doesn’t affect your health in any way too, so there isn’t much to worry about if you aren’t overweight or obese.

However, many people still wish to reduce its appearance, which can actually be done. Ahead, we’ll be taking a closer look at cellulite to find out what causes it, and the treatments available that can help reduce its appearance.

What is cellulite?

cellulite 3

Cellulite is a cosmetic skin condition in which the skin on the thighs, hips, abdomen, or other parts of the body has a dimpled, lumpy appearance. It’s also termed “orange peel skin” due to its appearance.

It forms when fatty tissue that’s deep within the skin pushes up against the connective tissue, resulting in dimpled skin. You’ll probably notice this around the back of your thighs, because that area has more fatty tissue compared to other areas of your body.

For women, the fat cells and connective tissues are arranged vertically, so when fat cells protrude into the layer of skin, the appearance of cellulite becomes more prominent. When it comes to men, their fat cells and tissues are arranged in a criss-cross structure, which is why it’s less likely for them to experience cellulite.

What causes the formation of cellulite?

The amount of cellulite you have also depends on a few factors, including your genetics, body fat percentage, and age. Besides that, the thickness of your skin also affects cellulite formation.

One of the biggest causes of cellulite in women is hormonal changes. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. That’s because estrogen in women decreases with age, as we approach menopause. Blood flow to the connective tissue also lowers.

When there’s less circulation, it can result in lower collagen production. What’s more, fat cells can also enlarge as estrogen levels fall. When combined, these factors make fat deposits even more visible. Age also causes the skin to become less elastic, thinner, and more likely to sag, which increases the chances of developing cellulite.

Other factors include weight fluctuations, a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, as well as smoking. Those who consume too much fat, carbohydrates, and salt and too little fibre are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite too.

That being said, those who eat healthily and live an active lifestyle can also have cellulite. And while it isn’t studied, some suggest that wearing tight clothes can lead to the formation of cellulite as it restricts blood flow.

What are the cellulite treatment options available in Malaysia?

cellulite 2

The truth is, there is no quick fix for cellulite. While there are plenty of topical creams and oils that claim to reduce cellulite, they may not actually be able to deliver the results you seek, and are incredibly subjective.

But the good news is that there are treatments to gradually reduce its appearance. Ahead, we’ve rounded up a few popular treatments that are available in Malaysia to help you reduce “orange peel skin”.

Before you make a decision, however, it’s always best to speak with your doctor or arrange for a consultation with a professional to find out which cellulite treatment works best for you.

1. Dermal fillers

This treatment involves injecting calcium-based fillers into the layer of skin to smoothen cellulite-induced skin irregularities, and it can also stimulate collagen production. However, the side effects that come with dermal fillers include swelling and redness but they are generally safe to use.

2. Laser treatment

A non-surgical procedure, laser treatments are a popular cellulite treatment option in Malaysia. It involves inserting a tiny laser fibre right beneath the skin, which then uses laser energy to breaks up tough bands under the skin. The treatment also thickens the skin, lowering the chances for cellulite to form. You may experience swelling or bruising after the laser treatment.

3. Radiofrequency (RF)

Radiofrequency (RF) uses wavelengths of controlled heat to target and shrink stubborn fat cells. RF technology is able to penetrate the inner dermis and stimulate collagen production, while also tightening existing collagen and elastin fibres. The blend of heat and light speeds up the metabolism of the fat cells, allowing them to be safely flushed out through the lymphatic system.
