Let’s face it, most of us have dealt with blackheads at one point or other and we reckon all of you can agree that they can be frustrating sometimes.

Sure, we can pretty much live our lives without caring about a bunch of tiny clogged pores on our nose but we’d be lying if we say that we don’t pay attention to it every once in a while, contemplating squeezing out the tiny spots.

And despite being indoctrinated in the perils of picking blackheads and popping blemishes by countless skincare experts, it’s still tough to resist the temptation sometimes when those pesky pores are staring right back at you in the mirror.

However, there are many other (more hygienic) ways to tackle the issue with skincare products, though it’s important to bear in mind that getting rid of blackheads is an ongoing process rather than a one-off treatment that will magically send blackheads packing once and for all.

One such blackhead-blitzing product that has been trending lately is the Bye Bye Blackhead 30 Days Miracle Green Tea Tox Bubble Cleanser by Korean skincare brand Some By Mi.

Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead: What it is and what does it do

For the uninitiated, the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead 30 Days Miracle Green Tea Tox Bubble Cleanser is a low-pH bubble cleanser that’s powered by Green Tea Tox (a combination of green tea water and various tea extracts), naturally derived beta hydroxy acid (BHA), and a tannin complex to lift away blackheads and whiteheads and keep pores squeaky clean for a brighter, clearer complexion.

Some By Mi is especially proud of the high ingredient concentration that it’s able to pack in one single product, which you can see below:

  • 240,000mg/L (ppm) of green tea water;
  • 16 kinds of tea extracts; and
  • 5,000mg/L (ppm) of BHA derived from white willow bark.

According to Some By Mi, you can use the formula as a weekly intensive blackhead cleanser or a daily cleansing formula. It’s purported to not only help dissolve blackheads and clean out blocked pores but also inhibit blackhead production.

Meanwhile, the konjac granules inside the formula is made with different sizes of green tea leaves, which offer gentle exfoliation without irritating skin. The bubble cleanser is also said to be formulated without any harmful chemicals that can potentially aggravate skin, and has a mildly acidic formula which makes it suitable even for sensitive skin.

Some By Mi also claims that the formula can remove light makeup thoroughly without the need to double cleanse.

As you can see from the above image, the Bye Bye Blackhead formula starts off as a greenish-hued gel which you can apply onto dry skin in a thin layer. If you’re using it as a weekly treatment, leave it on your face for three to five minutes as it starts foaming before massaging in circular motion with wet fingertips to slough away dead skin cells. Finish off by rinsing with lukewarm water.

As a daily cleanser, you just need to wet your fingers and massage the formula in circular motion as soon as it starts foaming before rinsing off with water.

Malaysian blogger Nina Enany, who tried the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser for a month, loved the effect that it had on her skin and would repurchase despite noting that the result wasn’t instant. According to Nina, she had to use the product twice a week for one month in order for the formula to thoroughly clear away blackheads, mop up excess oil, and tighten her pores.

Nina also noticed that the cleanser, which she said smelled like a combination of mint candy and green tea, caused her skin to become a little dry but found that pairing the cleanser with Some By Mi Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Serum (RM174.30 on Hermo) helped made her skin feel smoother and softer.

Meanwhile, Watsons spotlighted the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser in its February 2020 Beauty Box, which featured a selection of the latest K-beauty products. The reviewer Elsa, whose skin is of the dry and sensitive skin, shared that the formula made her skin look brighter and clearer while her pores appeared visibly smaller and gave it an overall five-star rating for its performance.

An Indonesian blogger who goes by the name Riri also tried the bubble cleanser formula on her oily skin, which she said produces a lot of blackhead that she needs to remove regularly. She remarked that the bubbles formed almost immediately after she spread the green, mucus-like liquid on her skin, and she could feel a slight warming sensation as the foam started to build up.

“I intentionally did not clean up my whitehead and blackhead in a week to test the effectiveness of this product,” she shared, adding on that she struggles with enlarged pores in my forehead and lots of whitehead on other parts of her face.

After using the bubble cleanser, Riri said that it really helped clean up sebum and whitehead instantly while tightening pores right away but unfortunately, it failed to remove her blackhead immediately. Instead, she noted that the cleanser helped the blackheads emerge to the skin surface after several uses which made it easier for her to squeeze out.

Another downside of the product: it made her skin dry, which she said is why she advised against using it as daily cleanser. For those with dry skin, she recommended moisturising right away after usage to avoid the uncomfortable, taut after-feel.

Having said that, Riri said she enjoyed using the product as it gave her “soft baby skin” after using it.

Indonesian influencer Molita Lin, who shared in an Instagram video that she had the bubble cleanser on rotation in her skin care routine, also uploaded a YouTube clip of her impressions of the product.

Molita said that she has some issues with skin oiliness and visible pores even though her skin looks generally good, so she was keen to try out the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser to see if it’d help with her pore size.

Speaking in Indonesian, she shared, “After washing my face, my skin felt very clean, soft, and fresh. When I first tried it, my pores are not totally gone of course but they felt a little tightened compared to before.

After having used it repeatedly, I’m happy to report that it suits my skin very well and doesn’t have any negative effects on me – no tiny bumps whatsoever, just smooth, clear skin. I highly recommend it to those who are struggling with oily skin and enlarged pores, as I feel you’ll see immediate results if you’re facing those skin concerns.”

Beauty vlogger Jemima Livia, also from Indonesia, documented her experience using the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser on YouTube as well.

Jemima, who remarked that she has more whiteheads than blackheads in her first impressions video, bought the product herself to test on the blackheads she has on her nose. She also roped in her husband, who she said has more blackheads on his face, to try the cleanser as well. You can watch the video here:

“Using it as a cleanser, it’s not surprising that the blackheads are still lingering around but I feel that our skin did look clearer and brighter after using it just once,” Jemima shared.

They also tried it as a mask on camera, and noted that the formula made the skin feel slightly dry after rinsing off. “Our skin looked glowing and moisturised, but it made our skin feel quite the opposite – tight and dry but with a really fresh after-feel.” Jemima’s husband also pointed out a cool, minty, and somewhat stinging sensation during the recording.

In her full review clip, Jemima is also joined by her husband and shared their experience of using the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser three times for a week on the nose area only where they have the most amount of blackhead. You can watch the full Bye Bye Blackhead review video here:

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as smoothly for them as both husband and wife developed breakouts from using the product regularly. Jemima’s husband nose also turned red and angry after using the product, with little to no signs of blackhead removal. In Jemima’s case, her nose became reddened and even slightly itchy.

The couple decided to stop using the product after getting unsatisfactory results and seeing no significant improvement on their blackhead, as they feared it might further irritate their skin.

Indonesian beauty YouTuber and budding makeup artist who goes by the moniker Jiglyciouss also reviewed the Some By Mi Bye Bye Blackhead bubble cleanser and shared her thoughts in an YouTube video.

She revealed, “When I first dispensed the product, I immediately picked up its noticeable green tea scent that has a hint of mint and smells really refreshing. As I left the product on my face to bubble up, I could feel a slight prickly sensation but it wasn’t unbearable.

When the time came to massage the foam on my skin, I could feel the tiny granules in the formula that work to exfoliate my skin as I gently rubbed the foam in circular motion. After rinsing off the foam, my skin felt fresher and smoother, and appeared brighter than before. As I found it to be a little drying, I used it as a mask once every four days and felt that it’s helped my skin look clearer and smoother.”
